It seems like less people are actually writing blogs these days, and instead posting video blogs on one of the popular outlets or another (I am intentionally not naming them). It seems that less people are reading blogs these days as well. It will be a real shame when one day everyone has forgotten how to actually read, instead of just stuffing their auricular and ocular inputs with audio and moving visual imagery from one type of video screen or another. When I was writing a blog several years ago (probably in the infancy of the video alternatives), I always seemed to have someone reading and/or commenting on the blogs I was writing. Now… nada. Well, not exactly nada, but it’s been pretty slim pickings, with minimal reading and no comments at all. One of the nicer updates to WordPress that we didn’t have when I was blogging previously is the Jetpack Stats, which shows you how many people actually view your blog, where they are located in the world, etcetera, etcetera… When I look at the stats for my past seven days, which includes a holiday that almost everyone in the world has off work (more free time to read?), this is what I see (as I alluded to, pretty meager results)…

I know… it might help if I wrote more often, if I wrote about juicier stuff that more people want to read about, If I figured out how to better use the options available to me to market my blog site (if I really cared), if I had some subscribers, and (sorry if the truth hurts) if I had some breasticles on my chest. Let’s face it, there are millions of horny guys out there in cyberland who will read a woman’s blog and think “maybe I have a chance with her…” Women don’t need to read a man’s blog, they only read them if they contain some content that holds their interest. But therein lies the rub… women can write about sex and their sexual appetites or habits, and thousands of men will subscribe to their blogs hoping to read something salacious. As soon as a man writes about sex, women think it’s creepy and run far, far away. So what is a man (who doesn’t give a shit about spectator sports) to write about that will garner the most readers?

Sure, I could post some of the fantastic nature photos I’ve taken here, but unless someone is a true photo nerd and knows just how good the photo actually is, and what it took to capture the image, it’s wasted time on the general populace. I could easily write a blog about AutoCAD or Civil 3D techniques (because it’s been my career for over 30 years), but again, that is a very specific audience.
It seems that the general trend of blogging is toward those who stay positive in their content and try to please the most people (hoping they won’t piss anyone off, and keep most of their reader base). However, I’m not necessarily one of those types of people. In fact, the next blog I write (following this one) may cause a few people to go “hmmm? did he just say that?” Life is not always positive, people… get a grip on reality. Since I don’t seem to have many readers anyway, I guess it won’t really matter.
Stay tuned.
